Non-smoking Policy

Staff and students are aware of the Tobacco Control Act that has been passed by the Government of Ontario. This law prohibits smoking on school property, both inside and outside of the building. For GLCT students this means:

  • NO smoking inside or outside the Great Lakes College of Toronto property.
  • ZERO tolerance for students caught smoking on and/ around the school property.

  If a student is caught smoking:

First Time – a letter will be sent home to notify parent/guardian signature and a fine of $300  must be paid. (a copy of the letter will be placed in student’s OSR.)

Second Time – a letter will be sent home to notify parent/guardian and a fine of $500  must be paid. (a copy of the letter will be placed in student’s OSR.). Student will be may be expelled and referred to the Municipal Tobacco- Control Office.

The intent of this policy is to ensure that the Great Lakes College of Toronto continues to preserve a smoke- free environment. All students and staff are expected to cooperate and comply with the established policy expectations, diligently.

If the smoking incident happens in the dorm area, the Property Manager will deal with he issue(s) and the individual(s) involved in a        smoking incident.

Failing to comply with the prohibition on smoking and vaping:

An individual who violates the prohibition on smoking and vaping in schools or on and around school grounds may be charged and if convicted, face a maximum fine of $1,000 (for the first offense) or $5,000 (for any further offence)
